Prominent muslim moderates have said that the greatest obstacle to critiquing the politics of fellow muslims is that they will be interpreted to be criticizing Islam. This is a very revealing and tragic reflection of how closely so many muslims identify with the religion and how their self-esteem is utterly subjugated to religious practice, as if the expression of individual creative thought puts one outside the fold. To a certain extent this explains why a few ruthless despots are able to maintain power in so many islamic states.
