The reasoning behind entering the back end of the business is to "package" the processes in a way that supports the sale of the frontend equipment.Amat is showing a commitment to this concept with their modular process tools.

In Japan, Advantest builds both testhandlers and testers.They can shave the margin of the less expensive testhandler and package it with the maintained margin on the tester.

Terradyne felt Cohu's margins were excessive and started an upstart testhandler division years back, in an effort to displace Cohu.The attempt failed dismally.

I think Amat may well have such dominance in the front end that they look to the backend.In fact rumors from this years Semicon indicating they were looking around.

Just an opinion.
