That lies at the feet of fate and the terrible effects of '9/11'. Also, during the Nineties, President Bill Clinton and Alan Greenspan indiscriminately allowed banks to lend money to potential investors to buy stock and to corporations to buy plant, when there was not a chance of their future earnings justifying their share prices.

The Gladiator fears there will be a price to be paid for these injudicious acts. The troop has benefited from having an open mind on markets and during the year has made some very successful up-bets on companies, such as WorldCom, AOL Time Warner, Celltech, Amazon.com, Goodyear, IBM and Oracle, whose share prices have not exactly been in the ascendant.
