I think the R's and D's coalitions are a bit more diverse than that. R's include a lot of the upper classes and other conservatives of all stripes. D's include a lot of the lower classes of all races and activists (environmental, product safety, etc.) of all stripes. The middle class is up for grabs and probably constitutes most of the independent/swing voters who really decide elections.
