Thanks. I haven’t been reading Iqbal Latif recently, but I know that few people have as great an insight into these issues as he does.
It is interesting, the story about Iraq appealing to the people’s religious feelings, while under attack. Reminds me a well known story about Joseph Stalin, another strongman. When the Nazis attacked Russia in the summer of ’41, Stalin, after having spent years and years trying to eliminated religion, killing priests and anyone who wouldn’t pray to the new idols, in the first speech after the start of the war appealed to the populace: “Brothers and Sisters…” Stalin, a former Divinity student himself, just knew the right words.
Iqbal is right. Like Afghanistan, this campaign will probably be swift and successful, and welcomed by the Iraqi people. The only real danger is the possibility of use of WMD’s by Saddam. |
