I hardly know anyone that is self employed with a successful ongoing business anymore. Everything seems to be chain operations, etc. Are there many independnat successful businesses in your area now? I am assuming this is a trend.

Interesting... you may be correct, a lot of independent business has gone to chains. Out here we have some high end used car dealerships which are independent, those are doing very well and expanding. Also grocery stores seem to do well as independents out here, catering to the upscale. There are a bunch with 2-and 3 store locations.

One interesting thing is (I believe) people are less interested in large malls these days. This is just a hunch, personal observation though. Malls make it difficult for independents I believe, leases are too high. You have a mall store right? Of course in California we don't have the weather issues though, so shopping outside is not a problem year round.
