Victor: There was a global outpouring of support after Sept 11 and plenty of support for us to enter Afghanistan. I received calls from Muslims in Asia that I work with -- out of the blue -- expressing their sincere condolences. We squandered that support.

As for power, I have, on many occasions represented the United States. I am not unfamiliar with the process of power. We should have and could have built a broad base of support to invade Iraq -- but we did not. It is a major screw-up. George Bush Sr. did it with flair. George Bush Jr. sent Dick Cheney and he got his ass kicked. He got nowhere. And that is where we are now on "coalition building". If we go into Iraq -- and that could very well be what happens -- it will be on far less favorable terms than we could have had. Our military deserves better political leadership.
