Consider these three sentences:

1. "Quite obviously, most readers and listeners are not so systematic."

2. "Quite obviously, most readers and listeners are not so systematic, nor could they be expected to be."

3. "Quite obviously, most readers and listeners are not so systematic, and the fact that they aren't shows that they are idiots."

What he wrote is no 1. Your interpretation seems to be closer to no. 3. How can you be so sure that he meant 3, and not 1 or 2, especially when you consider that he obviously responded to the criticisms of his readers between the first and second article?

I really think your interpretation is WAY too paranoid.
