Indonesia invaded E Timor and committed massive atrocities there. American blame for this is based on 1) a quote from an ex-CIA guy who said we gave Indonesia the green light and 2) Indonesia was armed by the US.

The ex-CIA guy might be right but if he is did the US know what would happen when the Indonesians went in?

I note from your own source the following:
In the following weeks a series of United Nations resolutions—supported by the U.S.—called for the withdrawal of the Indonesian troops

This would suggest that if indeed the US gave them a green light, they nevertheless didn't approve of what happened afterward.

Re. the second point, during the cold war, everybody non-communist and anti-communist was armed by the US.

In conclusion, a more reasonable interpretation would be the US made a serious misjudgment if they did in fact give Indonesia "a green light" to invade E Timor. Unless of course, you think US leaders for some reason simply want people to die. But you do consider the US the main source of evil in the modern world, don't you?
