Dan - I have an athlon 1800 desktop and I agree it is on a par with the 2GHZ P4... but the screen resolution on the CPQ notebook is unacceptable for serious development. On my desktop, I have 2 22" monitors set to 2048 by 1536 extended desktop, and that's about enough real estate to do real development and debug, or for graphic and digital video work. I can get by on a 1600 by 1200 (the size of the Dell and IBM portables, Sony has some in that class also) but SVGX+ is useful for web surfing and email, little more.

Also the CPQ machine has a slower hard drive than either the DELL or IBM drives. That also makes a difference in a development environment.
