Definitely. The anticipated earnings announcement may already be priced into the stock and the speculators involved with the stock ready to take profits. Take a look at MSFT. Beat earnings by a penny, has a history of beating earnings estimates, a bellweather with an incredible earnings record including the most recent earnings announcement, and the stock dumped about 9 points (6 percent) on the earnings announcement. The stock was already bid up for the earnings announcement and the speculators chose to take profits. Remember the old saying? Buy on rumour and sell on the news? In the current market, you have many "in-and-out" type of speculators doing just that. This is particularily true with the high-tech sector.
