Jack, Maurice, and Jon--For a different view on this subject, read Krugman's op-ed column in today's New York Times. Krugman points out that Greenspan actually recognized a stock market bubble in 1996 and considered raising margin rates at that time. But he got cold feet because he knew it would be very unpopular. Many analysts agree that raising margin interest rates would have been the best way to curb the bubble. Greenspan now denies it. Like any successful bureaucrat, he favors the axiom, make no decisions, make no mistakes, and defines his job accordingly. Art Bechhoefer
