The person in question was born in the US. Citizens have constitutional rights, even traitors.

And I recognize that the GOP was founded as an antislavery party. But antislavery and civil rights is not the province of one party over the other; it was rooted more in regionalism. Individuals like Lincoln, and Truman (desegregating the military) often had far more impact than the parties they represented. And Lincoln was quite willing to forgo an end to slavery if that would help in his principal quest of maintaining or restoring the Union. He said so.
