4smajore: Great article, And it just re-emphasizes the fight for survival of the family farm that has been ongoing since the early sixties.

Since my son is a dairy farmer carrying on a family tradition passed on to him from his grandfather. He works mostly alone on a small farm struggling to survive.

Because it is a small farm he does not have pollution problems. But their are large dairy operations that are also CAFOs as reported in that article. It concentrated on the beef chicken and hog parts.

One thing they didn't say that I will is that the penning up of these animals is to keep the product tender. And the land surrounding the pens, barns etc. are more valuable for growing feed crops. 1000 head and 4000 houves can destroy a large area of crop land in one day. It's almost in-humane what these animals are bred for. And like it said the breeding is narrowing the blood line.

I'm sorry to say factory/corporate farms are not going to go away. That Filae Mignon has to be tender or the customer will send it back.
