I have always thought those memorials were very touching.

There is a place on the north coast of Maui where there are many little stacks of rocks. I do not know their purpose but always assumed they were some kind of memorial, perhaps to lost sailors. The place has a wonderful, Japanese rock garden feel to it. Very touching, too. I much prefer stacks of rocks to plastic flowers and teddy bears.
