An ISP in Palo Alto is beging to do just that. They have a network that allows, for a daily fee access fee, a person to access the internet. Some coffee shops and a few other watering holes currently have this ability. Again light on the technology and emphasizing the sizzle.

The article in the San Jose Mercury did not describe how the technology worked but I imagine that each of the locations has an access point hooked to a land line. There was discussion about a future technology of a wide area 802.11 that would provide coverage.
