Father Terrence, I agree with Alex about the importance of balancing the concept of individual freedoms with some sensical, minimally intrusive government. Libertarianism as an ideal is quite appealing, although since both Michael Cummings and I define ourselves as libertarians, you can see, I think, that it means different things to different people.
If you abolish the IRS, for example, or the concept of taxes, which some libertarians are serious about, are we going to pass the hat the next time we want to build a new bomber? I know I won't be contributing to that one at all!! And what about the infrastructure? Will all roads be toll roads? What will happen when a real troll runs a toll road? Or a sadist who will not let any marsupials cross, even when properly leashed and accompanied by Alexa? Libertarianism in its purest forms is very close to anarchy, and will result in chaos, IMHO!!
Forget platitudes--let's be pragmatic instead!!! |
