Tim, I said fixed rail, not public transportation.

Fixed rail is public transportation. By saying "public transportation" I was allowing for any form including fixed rail.

Unbelievable..........of course, fixed rail is one of the modes of public transportation. However, my point was that only fixed rail has the potential to be faster than a car but not for you because you commute on the beltway.

You can't use fixed rail conveniently because the beltway has changed commuting patterns in DC.

There are a lot of places in the area where I could go to using fixed rail (the Metro). Traveling by car is usually faster but I might take the metro to avoid the hassle of finding a parking space.
