I think any attempt to group all Fundamentalist (of any kind) into one kit sack would be poorly conceived. There is a huge difference between what any fundamentalist leadership says publicly, privately, what they can do, and what the masses want. Understanding these nuances is much more important than taking some military action that would further incite and strengthen Anti-American sentiments. There always have been "pirates" of some kind, whether from the Barbary Coast or Caribbean. Understanding their MO and desires goes a long way to combating them.

I was watching the Discovery Channel last night. They were covering the training of UDT Seals. The intent here is to screen for supermen that can thrive in a variety of difficult forward positions. I think strategic methods are always better than a solution imposed from a poorly thought out tactical strike team of he-men. First thing I do when attacked is seek reconnaissance. Hand-wringing is not really an adequate metaphor for what the U.S. is doing. It seems more like making political statements without objectives. I went back almost a year to some posts I'd made days after the aftermath from the 9/11 attack. You know what? I still agree with myself!!
