I disagree. The North was divided on the issue of freedom for the slaves. The business interests (in the North) were in favor of it, and the labor interests (like the Irish) were against it. It came down to economic interests.

The Republican party has always been a party of the business interests, but it is not true that business interests are incompatible with human rights.

As long as we're on this subject, which party was it that gave women the right to vote?
