That's not what I mean. We have been having economic problems for a few years. They have been having economic problems for longer then that. Both have been through booms and bush numerous times since the US came in to existance.

Its a problem largely caused by their greater degree of socialism.

Marx defined socialism as the state that exists between capitalism and communism. a hybrid containing elements of both isms. Most European countries fit that bill.

No, socialism was government owning the means of production, it was supposed to be a transitional state one the way to real communism where the government would wither away and the means of production where owned in common without the need for more then at most a minimal government.

I see........socialism is bad because it keeps people from dying of hunger or from a root canal. Capitalism is good because it makes people hungry and allows them to die from root canals. How come socialism sounds better?

Capitalism is good because it creates the resouces needed to deal with hunger or dental problems. Socialism is bad because it reduces the resources available to society to take care of these things and others and it causes them to be used less efficently. It also is bad because it reduces freedom.

Edit - Instead of having me defend his post, would you mind if I invite Neocon over to do it? He might have a differnt angle on it then I would even though we mostly agree in this area.
