BW)(MOTOROLA)(MOT) Motorola Reports IRIDIUM Satellite Anomaly

Business Editors

CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 18, 1997--Iridium(R) LLC
was informed by Motorola (NYSE:MOT) that on Thursday, July 17, 1997,
it confirmed through technical analysis a loss of communications
with an IRIDIUM satellite.
The satellite, one of five launched July 9, 1997, was in a
parking orbit awaiting its ascent to final mission orbit. The other
16 satellites orbiting the earth continue to function within normal
parameters.
Motorola advised Iridium LLC that the anomaly is not expected to
impact the scheduled date for commercial service in September 1998.
Motorola designed the IRIDIUM system to accommodate such an anomaly.
For example, each of the six orbital planes will contain an on-orbit
spare satellite.
