OT Mary, The S&W .38 special is an excellent choice for home defense. It is the gun that I most recommend for novices who are buying their first gun. Modest recoil, easy operation and easy to learn. 4" barrel is more accurate than a 2" barrel (snub-nosed), but either are eminently suitable for dispatching evil stock promoters. If you go target shooting just about any kind of ammunition will be suitable. Buy the cheapest. However, for home defense I would recommend one of the frangible-type rounds that are available like Glasers or Mag-safes. These special rounds are expensive but are guaranteed stoppers. Ask your Cop friends.
