FWIW.....total Korean net adds were 316,000 for the month of August. This compares to 122,000 in the month of July.

At least one analyst expected a sequential decline in the number of net adds.

Frequency Hop – The Wireless Flash Preview

Tim Long

This edition of the Frequency Hop highlights the upcoming week’s events that could act as catalysts in our wireless equipment coverage universe.

* Korean August Subscriber To Be Released: SK Telecom (1767.KS, Restricted, W230K, TP:350K) and Korean CDMA subscriber addition results for August are expected late this week. We expect July’s normalized net adds of 122k to fall off slightly given seasonal weakness and disputes over subsidization. In July, SK Telecom reported 153K net adds while KT Freetel reported a 19k loss of subs.

* Japan’s KDDI (9433, HOLD, ¥339K, TP ¥350K) Expected to Show Solid Net Adds for August: Later this week, we expect KDDI to report solid CDMA 1x gross adds yet anticipate that churn rate will drag on the net add number for the company overall. A healthy ramp in CDMA 1x continued in July with 490k net adds, bringing the total 1x base to 1.6M with mgmt comfortable with estimates of 7m subs on its 1x network by March ‘03. Over 10% of Japanese CDMA subscribers are using 1X handsets. We expect KDDI’s CDMA 1x gross adds to be in line with 490k in July.

* China Unicom (0762.HK, HK$5.65, HOLD, TP HK$5.50) To Report 1H:02 Results: China Unicom reported higher CDMA net adds of 322k in July compared to 151k in June and we expect August to show a similar magnitude of improvement. We anticipate Unicom to confirm that strong sub adds are derived from heavy promotion of CDMA service packages, decreasing effective ASPs closer in line with GSM ASPs.
