The Civil War in America was driven by metaphysical core values and not economic hegemony. That did play a role but not the main role. Same is true with the Cold War, Viet Nam and Korea. WWII and WWI too. While there were economic elements in all these conflicts, few historians have identified them as primary factors (short of maybe, the rise of Fascism in German as a result of the failure of the Weimar Republic.) I still think that is a stretch.
