A COUPLE WEEKS AGO, my colleague Richard Starr had a genius idea: On the morning of September 11, one of the networks should re-air, in full, its original broadcast from a year ago.

I actually think that's a good idea.

I missed the whole thing. Slept through it all. I was getting home from work and just crawling into bed when the first plane hit the Tower. I woke up in the early afternoon, turned on the computer to check my work email. There were emails from employees asking if they should go to work, considering what was going on "in New York." Perplexed, I checked Drudge. With the big picture of the second plane hanging in air in front of the second tower.

I didn't have cable at the time or an antenna for the tube in my apartment, so I ran to Radio Shack and got a pair of rabbit ears. I've been in some pretty traumatic situations, but I don't think they come anywhere near the shock I felt that afternoon.

We all need to be reminded of that shock.
