Globe says RIM maintains advantage -- analyst

Wed 4 Sept 2002

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that prospects for
Research In Motion remain good despite fears the maker of BlackBerry
wireless E-mail devices and software-related services may be losing its
technological edge to rivals such as Microsoft Corp., according to a new
analyst's report. The Globe's Showwei Chu writes that lately, investors
have been questioning RIM's ability to maintain its lead with its
proprietary operating system -- which allows BlackBerry subscribers to send
E-mails wirelessly -- now that vendors, such as T-Mobile USA, offer
Microsoft's enhanced Pocket PC, a personal digital assistant with cellphone
features. New BlackBerrys also have a cellphone feature. "For the short to
medium term, RIM maintains a healthy competitive advantage and is also
likely to prosper in the longer term," Gus Papageorgiou, an analyst at
Scotia Capital, said in the report. He said the potential market for
Microsoft in wireless data devices is limited by the fact that in order for
Pocket PC cellphones to be adopted in the corporate environment, customers
must have Windows 2000 installed on their office computer systems.
