dv is the first cdma2000 standard that is handicapped by the European-style committee-based standard disease.

do is pure QUALCOMM, which is probably why it's working. A few vendors - the usual suspects - you know who they are - complained to holy hell that do slid through the 3GPP2 standards process like shit through a goose, without appropriate consideration of their proprietary proposals.

Even with dv, Working Group 5 continued to test and cross-confirm proposed technologies while establishing the foundation technology. However, scheduling pressures (trying to finish in time for ITU IMT2000 submission) from the very same vendors plus a few carriers (PCS, Alcatel, BellSouth, as I recall) pressured the quick inclusion of highly speculative technologies from the 1xtreme proposal as prospective component technologies, (these can also be found in 3GPP HSDPA) that Q quite clearly questioned because they were included without successful testing and cross confirmation of claims.

This is indicative of the 3GPP technique for standard development that has led to 3 years of UMTS Release 99 corrections - that in fact continue in startling numbers today.

Will dv be the first cdma2000 standard to face a similar fate? Perhaps.

It may well be that do is the last clean cdma2000 standard.

As regards Q's next (post cdma2000) technology leap, I look for it to be developed outside the standards bodies, with Q developing a new value chain from scratch, as it did in the early days of cdma.
