Silicon Graphics and Multimedia Development Corporation of Malaysia Support Malaysia's Vision 2020 with $5.6 Million (U.S.) Collaborative Relationship
Foremost HPC Facility in ASEAN Brings Leading-Edge SGI Technology To Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Sept. 4/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Malaysia's Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC) has signed a $5.6 million (U.S.) contract with Silicon Graphics (NYSE: SGI - News) to deliver a world-class SGI(R) Reality Center(TM) facility, a Visual Area Networking system and rendering services to Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC). The project was completed this month. The Creative Application Development Center (CADC), which will house the latest SGI® technology, is a milestone in Malaysia's long-term planning vision to become a fully developed nation and knowledge-rich society by 2020. Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad will officiate at the new facility's official opening ceremony on Sept. 6.
Tan Sri Dato' Dr. Othman Yeop Abdullah, executive chairman of the Multimedia Development Corporation said, "We are pleased to be working together with Silicon Graphics, a world leader in high-performance computing, visualization and the management of complex data. As a one-stop agency, the Multimedia Development Corporation was established to facilitate the development of the MSC and to expedite the entry of investors into the MSC."
"Our collaboration with Silicon Graphics will bolster our efforts in nurturing world-class small and medium-size enterprises in ICT (information communications and technology) by providing market access and leading-edge human resource development and training," he added.
Outside of the United States, the CADC represents one of the largest concentrations of SGI technology servicing the core industry verticals -- government and defense, sciences, manufacturing, energy and media. The SGI Reality Center facility powered by a 16-processor SGI® Onyx® 3800 system makes it the most advanced Reality Center facility in South East Asia. SGI Reality Center visualization systems allow teams of technical and creative professionals to engage in interactive, real-time engineering and design review, data analysis, critical training, presentation, or command-and-control operations. They immerse users in virtual environments to explore, understand and communicate about data in ways not possible in the physical world, thus increasing speed of decision-making, realizing cost savings and enhancing productivity. In addition, SGI's Visual Area Network concept will, in the near future, also enable MSC's large contingent of high-technology organizations to have universal access to advanced visualization using any computing device over standard networks.
Under the collaborative relationship agreement, SGI and MDC will jointly work on positioning, strategy and lead generation for the benefit of MSC status companies, as well as on developing associated products like specialized software applications.
SGI has a long history of working with the Malaysian government -- Bob Bishop, the company's chairman and chief executive officer, has been a member of Malaysia's International Advisory Panel since its initiation in 1997. The panel, a government and private sector think tank, seeks to counsel the Malaysian Prime Minister on shaping the country's Multimedia Super Corridor. Bishop will participate in its annual meeting in September.
"SGI believes that government and the private sector can work together to form a powerful alliance to drive economic development. As an enabler of technical excellence and creative innovation, we at SGI are especially proud of our contribution to Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor. Vision 2020 is an exciting goal that must draw on the best minds and the most sophisticated computing resources available. Our relationship with MDC is significant on many levels and demonstrates SGI's deep commitment to and belief in the concept of the MSC as a progressive means of national development," said Bishop.
Upon delivery, the Reality Center facility and Visual Area Network system will be a test bed for various visualization applications and content development for scientific, industrial and entertainment purposes. MDC intends to position the facility as the preferred site for scientists undertaking complex research and computational work, for students of such disciplines as virtual reality, animation and computational sciences, for institutions of higher learning, and as training sites for software developers.
