If that was your point, I'd agree, though based on all the soapbox ranting about incompetence, the world being against us, seizing Iraq to control its oil and all that crap, I doubt anyone here understood your "point" to be simply "make the case, build support and get on with it."

As for Cheney, if the intent of his speeches was to "build support" anywhere beyond core party loyalists, then he did about as good a job as all the efforts to talk up the economy (I'm glad they've stopped that - hope they don't start again). However, I'm not so sure that was the purpose - it may be that his tough talk was meant primarily for Hussein and potential sympathizers, as, perhaps, were Powell's cautionary statements that seemed to open the door a crack to a diplomatic solution.
