For me, it is how general the analog is and how testable it is. I have models for everything. When I commute, I've made observations about which lanes I should be in when I commute. It is often counter intuitive. I don't question why so many people go so slow in the fast lane going up the Sunol grade, for instance. But, for some reason the right lane is almost always open. There are occasional trucks there, but no one ever feels that THEY are going slow enough to go over there. Even the trucks, which is odd.

I've often said that I go to nature for my models. All models should be testable or they aren't particularly good models. In my previous example, I should periodically go and check to see if people are really doing as I expect (going slow in the fast lane). They are and have been. But not every time. Just most of the time.

One overwhelming rule is that all models are imperfect. So, if someone models God or anything else in some way, then they are necessarily incorrect at least part of the time. I admit ignorance freely and am willing to test all of my models from time to time.
