There you go again. There is a vast difference between "If there was no oil in Iraq and surrounding countries there would be no US interest in the region at all -- that is a simple fact of life" and "You cannot remove oil from our concept of self-interest in the middle east." Make up your mind. Look at it this way. If Saddam Hussein was running Argentina, building nukes, gassing his own people and invading Chile we'd be just as interested. Allies are allies.
