I suspect so. We both know that Texas is "South" not "West" and a black Democratic Senator is a stretch.

Nope. LBJ insisted it was SouthWest. Remember. And, of course, there's the line, with more than a little truth in it, that it's neither south nor west; it's Texas.

As for an African American getting elected, I would have said he could never succeed with the business community in Dallas but he did. He is unusual.

And gone are the days when the bulk of the vote was rural.

Having said all that, I should have said the oil money, which is, as you know, always crucial in Texas, is most likely to go for the Republican. That will make a big, big difference. Unfortunately.
