The Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA) has decided to celebrate the first anniversary of September 11th by giving an award to ... wait for it ... Edward Said. Not unnaturally, this has sent Martin Kramer into a fit, and he has an extended riff in a new article

Mesa Culpa

Kramer points out that the government has just founded a program to pay for language-training centers on campus, called NLFI. Does Mesa welcome more training in Middle Eastern languages? Nah, they're boycotting it. Some of the students might become government agents, and that would be too awful.

Not to be outdone, Spain has just awarded its highest peace prize to Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said.

You can fit Said's peace activities into a thimble. He broke with Arafat when Arafat signed Oslo.
