A telecom analyst from Lehman Brothers was just on Bloomberg TV talking about China Unicom. He said that they have upped their forecast for CDMA subscibers at China Unicom from 2.1 million to 3.5 million subscribers. He said he had a lot of confidence in the CDMA network given what he had seen at Sprint and Korea and Japan though it would not be profitable for two more years or so. He expected further expenditure of $1 to $2 billion. Given these losses and despite increased profitability on GSM side as expenditures tapered off, he was lukewarm on China Unicom stock. He did say though that if he saw the 1X business take off with increases in ARPU from new services he would upgrade the stock. Unicom reports earnings later today.
