Rents are declining at least in part because so many people are moving into their own digs - and all that really does is make the banks and mortgage companies the direct landlord of record, instead of being one step removed behind a rental building owner.

Of course, most people who own rental buildings actually have other assets for when things turn a bit sour, unlike the situation we have brewing here. Anything exposed to mortgage defaults down the road a bit is going to get nuked
