No one bats 1000. No one wins all battles. Picking on mistakes, or alleged mistakes, is not to the point. The point is that we won the overall strategic competition with the Soviet Union. One of the most brilliant moves was the Kissinger strategy of triangulation, playing off the Soviet Union against China. This required doing business with despised regimes, as had "peaceful coexistence" before it, but hardly anyone questions that. Similarly, it is possible that we would have lost the Second World War had Stalin not continued pinning down massive amounts of German troops on the Eastern Front. No one but reactionaries question the strategic wisdom of the alliance with Stalin, despite the problems that arose after the war. The idea that we should never dirty our hands, or that the inability to resolve all problems invalidates actual success, is childish.......
