Sprint Gives 3G Subs Vision Of Weather Maps
By Kristy Bassuener
September 4, 2002
Cable network The Weather Channel today introduces a wireless application for weather junkies on the go. Dubbed a downloadable Doppler Radar program, the new feature will enable mobile-phone users to access radar weather photos and maps of their location. The maps are refreshed every five minutes, and customers can pan across maps, as well as zoom in up to 75 miles and out up to 1,200 miles for a more all-encompassing view.

''The arrival of new technology means that consumers now have access to even more information to which they've grown accustomed from The Weather Channel--and with convenience and speed that is new to the mobile environment,'' says Jody Fennell, vice-president of wireless and broadband for weather.com. ''The Weather Channel is committed to being on the leading edge of technology to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of consumers who seek out our weather information across multiple platforms.'' The cable network began providing content to wireless carriers in 1999.

Currently, the radar application is available only to customers using Sprint PCS' Vision 3G mobile service, but the company plans to provide the service through other major U.S. carriers throughout the year. The Weather Channel also recently finalized new partnerships with Mazingo and MobiMate expanding its offerings on PDAs and, through Mazingo, introducing video forecasts via mobile devices for the first time.
