Symantec CEO backs third-quarter outlook

Thursday September 5, 10:58 am ET

NEW YORK, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Symantec Corp. (NasdaqNM:SYMC - News) Chief Executive Officer John Thompson on Thursday said he backs the company's third-quarter financial outlook but stressed that the computer security company is "still clawing one deal at a time."

He added, however, that the consumer business was strong, giving him "some confidence" on third-quarter targets for earnings per share of 30 cents on sales of $300 million to $310 million.

"This quarter looks like any other September quarter for us," he said at a Salomon Smith Barney technology conference here. "If anything, the consumer business is running quite high, which gives us some confidence."

Symantec still has about 60 percent of its business to do in the last month of the quarter, he added.

He said he is not making any assumptions for any unusual recovery in the fourth quarter. "It is a tight environment and we expect that to continue through the first and second quarters of next year," he said.
