That is not important. What is important is that I uphold values. Rules are intended to preserve values (often safety). They do not always do so--as they are designed for the general rather than the specific. An intelligent person (and moral agent) does not suspend thinking in order to obey a "rule".

If I am at a 4-way stop, and the driver behind me is on ice, I will go through if the risk/reward of overall safety dictates such. The baby behind me does not need to go through the windshield just because I am "in the right"--rule-wise.

So, I don't follow rules; I follow values. But don't you kids try this at home...
