The USSR supported both the Chinese and Vietnamese Communists in their wars against the West. They were defending the Vietnamese against US imperialism, not unlike our aid to Afghanistan in the 1980s. I get the distinct impression Eastern Europe didn't enjoy being "buffered" Eastern Europe wasn't being buffered. Eastern Europe WAS the buffer! BTW, I don't disagree that the USSR was an imperialist. I just think that in Eastern Europe they had a reasonable cover story. Unlike, say, the US in Latin America. Tom
