I doubt that Saddam is much different now than when he was on "our side" -- only now he is not on "our side". Two years ago, Pakistan, a country with nuclear weapons, supported the Taliban -- the only goverment to recognize the Taliban as the government of Afghanistan. The ties were and probably still are tight. Our inability to find Bin Laden is likely reduced by the help that Al Queda receives via Pakistani friends -- both in and out of government service. Pakistan and terrorist groups working within Pakistan have been crossing the border into India and killing people for years in an attempt to take Kashmir out of India by violent means -- sometimes on a large scale and sometimes at a high level targeting the leaders of the country. But we will not seek regime change in Pakistan, even though it routinely tests its missles and its nuclear weapons, engages in state sponsored terrorism and is on the front lines of states that aided the people who attacked us. Why? Because we decided we needed them and we cut a deal with them. We won't cut a deal with Saddam. We don't need him. We will kill him. And by killing him we hope we will secure the oil patch.
