What's going on with Intel's yields?

The said in their conference call that they've had to increase the number of wafers they're processing. This comes as they move from 217 mm2 Willamette P4 to 131 mm2 Northwood P4. They should have been able to get 5 times as many dice, per wafer. Total units aren't increasing much, if any, so why does Intel need to pay to process more wafers?

This can't be good for their costs, especially as the price war with AMD intensifies. The variable cost of producing CPU dice is a small part of the cost of the CPU, but when you have to dumpster 5 chips for every one you can sell, it's got to hurt.
