I wouldn't say Ollie North is all hat. Well, maybe now he is. But the main problem with North was in his operational days, when he was a loose cannon.

Going back to Eliot Cohen and his executive/military analysis, Ollie North is the opposite end of the spectrum from the McClellan school of military leadership, but at least as dangerous, if not more so. Public posturing aside, the inner circle of Reaganauts were apparently none too pleased with the blemish he left, enough so to get the old man himself to blackball Ollie's Senate bid. Good for Ron on that one, anyway.
