As an investor, I recall more PR fiascos prior to Barrett, that cost Intel sums of money in terms of payout.

Separately, take a look at the overall pattern of Intel's PE. That metric will give you an indicator on Barrett's communication skills and how it has positively influenced the PE.

So, what is he suppose to do for you - lie or withhold information? I'd rather see a CEO be honest and disclose information like he did. Intel guided down within its range - take a look around you, in Silicon Valley at least, growth isn't exactly hopping up and down at this particular moment.

Steve Balmer's comment was more blunt a few years ago when he said MSFT was too high. People criticize the truth when they don't want to hear it.

What new markets was Intel entering prior to Barrett?

On Barrett's watch, Compaq's management team waived the flag and gave Dec's Alpha to Intel (good for Intel too). It seems to me HP's management essentially backed off from the chip business by having Intel work with their chip group. Sun is starting to show signs of backing off on some of their own chips for their product lines. Who is left? AMD?
