Putin and Bush discuss situation around Iraq

RosBusinessConsulting. Friday, Sep. 6, 2002, 7:31 PM Moscow Time

A telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President George Bush took place today. The conversation was initiated by the American party. Within the framework of a regular exchange of views on the topical questions of international affairs, the Heads of State discussed the situation around Iraq. Both parties remarked on the necessity of working out a common position, which would be entirely in accordance with the interests of strengthening international security and the consolidation of the antiterrorist coalition. The Press Service of the Russian President reported that during the discussion, President Putin voiced serious doubts about the grounds for the use of force against Iraq in terms of international law and global politics. The necessity of coordinated political and diplomatic efforts to implement the existing resolutions of the UN Security Council on Iraq was underlined in this connection. Putin and Bush also discussed questions of intensifying cooperation within the framework of the antiterrorist coalition and a number of other issues.
