Putin and Blair discuss situation in Iraq

President of Russia Vladimir Putin conducted a telephone conversation with British Prime Minister Tony Blair on an initiative of Great Britain today. The officials discussed urgent international problems and paid special attention to the situation in Iraq, the presidential press service reported to RosBusinessConsulting. It was mentioned that Russia and Great Britain have rather similar approaches to the Iraqi problem: both countries want international inspection groups to return in Iraq and start implementing a UN control and inspection mechanism there in accordance with resolutions of the UN Security Council. At the same time, Putin drew attention to real possibilities for political solutions to the Iraqi problem and mentioned that he wasn't sure about doing it by force for several reasons: from the point of international law, the possibility that it will have a serious negative impact on the situation in the Persian Gulf and the Middle East and for the sake of maintaining the integrity of the anti-terrorist coalition. Putin and Blair agreed to keep in touch about these and many other urgent problems, especially the preparations for Blair's upcoming visit to Russia scheduled for October.
