X, I think you are pressing this split between the poster and the person too far. We persons all operate in many venues, many capacities. We may present ourselves differently in each and we may be perceived by others differently in each, but that doesn't mean the we as friends or colleagues or posters or shoppers are distinct entities--just different aspects of ourselves. A person named Joe may appear differently in his capacity as employee from how he appears in his capacity as husband or baseball coach. One may be aggressive while the other is sweet. People who know Joe in one capacity only might not recognize him in another capacity. And Joe may appear entirely different regardless of venue to a blind person who cannot read any more clues than we can of Joe the poster. The person and the poster aren't separate. The poster is an aspect of the person, perhaps an extension of the person, but not a different entity. A person stalking you in 3d (actual body to actual body), is (imo) different than a word representing a person stalking a word representing another person You can accept the above perspective and still make your point. In many ways we maintain discrete aspects. Joe the coach might talk business after the game with a colleague yet not treat unfairly the son of one of his business rivals on the team he coaches. He would keep the two venues separate to a certain extent. Likewise we keep SI separate from our 3D lives to a certain extent. You wouldn't take your complaint against the colleague from the baseball diamond to the workplace. You're supposed to be able to still work with the guy no matter how obnoxious he is as a baseball dad. As for what language we use for the different venues, being stalked in person is not the same as being stalked on SI. Perhaps you consider them sufficiently different to require the use of two separate words to describe the activity, but for the most part we understand that SI stalking is not as threatening as in person stalking. Nor is friendship the same, nor does "knowing" someone mean the same. But we can still use those words and convey meaning, recognizing the meanings are different from context to context. IMO, it is not necessary to insist that the poster and the person are different entities to recognize that you don't take SI grudges to 3D and that the same words mean something a bid different in the different venues.
