Theres a frontpage article in the Spiegel of this week about 09/11 and how it came about. It looks very much like a horrible kind of business idea by Muhamed Atta, with OBL just providing the venture capital and the core intelligence. For instance, on the computer in their Hamburg flat they found listings of available SW flight simulators dated something like 1998, ie well before the top echalon decided to go and sight see Afghanistan.
