The car analogy is very apt, Karen.

I watched at least three Court TV cases where very decent people were sentenced to prison for the ultimate results of road rage incidents. In each case, these otherwise good citizens seemed as perplexed as any one else as to how they could have stepped out of their true characters in that fatal moment. I do think it is a very apt illustration of how we may find ourselves to be changed by a certain venue which we enter from time to time. Another somewhat similar example might be the behavior of "good citizens" who get caught up in a lynch mob.
